Carette history

Georges Carette, a Frenchman who emigrated to Germany as a young man, founded his company in Nuremberg, Germany, in 1893, having started making toys in 1886.
Carette's toys were mechanical tinplate models of ships, streetcars and railroads, and were very popular.
By the 1900s, Carette was making steam models and passenger cars for the British market through Bassett-Lowke.

Georges Carette fled Germany at the outbreak of World War I and subsequently returned to France, where he spent the rest of his life.

His partner ran the company until 1917, when it closed for good, although some of the tooling was acquired by Bassett-Lowke, which continued to manufacture ex-Carette models under the Bassett-Lowke name.
